Beng Mealea is a large 12th-century temple about 40 km east of the main Angkor group, left almost entirely unrestored - galleries have collapsed into heaps of sandstone and the forest has closed over much of the plan. Walkways make it safe to cross, and it gives a sense of what the French found when they began clearing Angkor.
