Temple stonework in Cambodia
Free, open, and not a tour

The My Travel Factory Cycle Club

Group rides out of Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Kampot, Battambang and Koh Kong. Residents, visitors, anyone with a bike and a helmet.

In short

The Cycle Club is a free community riding group run by My Travel Factory in Cambodia. There is no membership fee and no obligation to book anything: bring a bike, or hire one from us, and ride. Six routes are planned across five provinces, from a flat 20 km riverside loop in Phnom Penh to a hard gravel day in the Cardamom foothills.

Status

The club is forming. The routes below are real rides that people already do in Cambodia, but we have not yet run them as scheduled club rides - so there is no calendar on this page, because we are not going to invent one. Register your interest and we will confirm the first dates by email once there are fifteen riders in a city.

The rides

Six routes, five provinces

Phnom Penh

Riverside dawn loop

Out along Sisowath Quay before the traffic wakes, up past the Royal Palace and back through the old French quarter. The one ride that works on a city bike, and the easiest way to meet the rest of the club.

Distance
20-25 km
Terrain
Flat tarmac
Pace
Social, 18-22 km/h
Suits
Anyone with a bike and an alarm clock
When
Scheduled once the roster fills
Phnom Penh

Koh Dach island circuit

The classic Phnom Penh escape: a short ferry across the Mekong onto Silk Island, then a lap of shaded village lanes, weaving houses and sandbank beaches before the ferry back. Gravel or hybrid tyres are happier here than 25mm road rubber.

Distance
40-50 km
Terrain
Lanes, packed dirt, one ferry
Pace
Steady, with stops
Suits
Riders comfortable with half a day in the saddle
When
Scheduled once the roster fills
Siem Reap

Angkor back roads

Past the moat and out on the quiet eastern roads towards Banteay Kdei and Pre Rup, away from the coach route. An Angkor pass is needed for anything inside the park boundary, so we say so up front rather than at the gate.

Distance
35-60 km
Terrain
Park roads and rice-field tracks
Pace
Unhurried - the point is the stops
Suits
Anyone happy to ride and sightsee in one morning
When
Scheduled once the roster fills
Kampot

Kampot to Kep coast run

Salt flats, pepper farms and the Damrei foothills on your right the whole way. Support vehicle carries the bags and takes anyone who has had enough, which is the honest way to run a 50 km ride in this heat.

Distance
50-55 km one way
Terrain
Rolling coastal tarmac
Pace
Brisk, with a crab lunch at the end
Suits
Riders with some road fitness
When
Scheduled once the roster fills
Battambang

Battambang rice-field spin

Flat, green and almost traffic-free, threading between villages that still make rice paper and fish paste by hand. The friendliest ride on this list and the one most likely to end in somebody’s front yard drinking sugar-cane juice.

Distance
30-40 km
Terrain
Farm tracks and levee paths
Pace
Gentle
Suits
Families and first-timers
When
Scheduled once the roster fills
Koh Kong

Cardamom foothills gravel

The club’s hard day out: red dirt into the Cardamom foothills, streams to wade and gradients that will find your lowest gear. Dry season only, guide and mechanic always present, and we will tell you plainly if it is not your ride yet.

Distance
45-70 km
Terrain
Laterite, river crossings, real climbing
Pace
Hard
Suits
Experienced off-road riders only
When
Scheduled once the roster fills
House rules

Six rules, and they are not negotiable

A free club still has to be a safe one. These are written down so nobody has to have the argument on the roadside at six in the morning.

  • 01

Helmet on every ride. No helmet, no roll-out - there is no polite version of this one.

  • 02

Lights front and rear, even in daylight. Cambodian traffic looks for motorbikes, not bicycles.

  • 03

Two litres of water minimum. Heat, not gradient, is what ends rides here.

  • 04

Your own travel or medical insurance. The club is free; it is not an insurer.

  • 05

Nobody is dropped. The slowest rider sets the pace between regroups.

  • 06

Under-16s ride with a parent or guardian on the same ride.

Practical

What to bring, and what we bring

  1. 01

    A bike, or ours

Any working bike is welcome. If you do not have one, hire from us and ride it on the club run.

  2. 02

    Helmet, lights, water

Two litres minimum. Heat is what ends rides in Cambodia, not gradient.

  3. 03

    We bring the tools

Pump, tubes, patches, chain tool and a first-aid kit ride with the group on every route.

  4. 04

    Nobody rides home alone

We regroup at every junction, and someone stays with the last rider the whole way.
