What this trip is

The Phnom Penh & Angkor Discovery is a 5 day, 4 night private Cambodia tour that begins in Phnom Penh and ends in Siem Reap. It covers the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and the Choeung Ek memorial, an overland crossing through rural Cambodia, a full guided day at Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm, Angkor Thom and the Bayon, and a boat morning on the Tonle Sap. It suits first-time visitors who want to understand Cambodia, not just photograph it.

  • 1

You see the whole country, not one town

Most short Cambodia trips never leave Siem Reap. This one opens in the capital, crosses the rice-growing heartland by road, and finishes at Angkor — so you leave with a sense of the country rather than a single archaeological park.

  • 2

The history is handled with care

Tuol Sleng and Choeung Ek are difficult places. Your guide is a Khmer national who will give you the context, the space and the quiet these sites deserve, and will never rush you through them.

  • 3

    Angkor at its best hour

We enter Angkor Wat from the quieter eastern side at first light, then move through Ta Prohm and the Bayon while the main gate crowds are still arriving at the reflecting pools.

Highlights

What you will actually do

01 — The Capital The memorial stupa at Choeung Ek outside Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Tuol Sleng & Choeung Ek

A guided morning through the two sites that explain modern Cambodia: the former school that became Security Prison 21, and the memorial at Choeung Ek. Inscribed by UNESCO as the Cambodian Memorial Sites in 2025.

02 — The Road North Rice fields and palm trees along the road between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap

Overland to Siem Reap

Six hours of real Cambodia through the window: rice fields, stilted villages and roadside markets. Upgrade to a private car and we stop at Skun market and the 12th-century Kampong Kdei bridge, still carrying traffic 800 years on.

Shared coach or private carMarket stopAncient Khmer bridge
03 — The Temples Stone faces carved into the towers of the Bayon temple at Angkor Thom

Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm & the Bayon

A full guided day: sunrise at Angkor Wat, the strangler figs of Ta Prohm, the quiet ruins of Ta Nei, the South Gate of Angkor Thom and the 200-odd stone faces of the Bayon. Your one-day Angkor pass is included.

04 — The Lake Stilted houses of a floating village on the Tonle Sap lake, Cambodia

A morning on the Tonle Sap

Southeast Asia's largest freshwater lake, and the floating and stilted communities that live on it. We choose the village by season so you see the lake working rather than performing.

Day by day

5 days / 4 nights, hour by hour

Every timing below is a starting point, not a rule. Tell us your flights and we rebuild the shape of the trip around them.

Day 1

Arrival in Phnom Penh

A soft landing. We meet you at the airport and get you settled — the rest of the day is yours.

On arrival

Airport pickup

Your driver meets you inside the terminal and transfers you to your hotel in air-conditioned comfort.

Afternoon

Settle in

Rest, swim, or shake off the flight. We can suggest a riverside walk along Sisowath Quay if you have the energy.

Evening

Your first Khmer meal

Optional — tell us your taste and we will book a table, from a street-food alley to a white-tablecloth Khmer kitchen.

Day 2

Phnom Penh — the story of a city

The day that gives the rest of the trip its meaning, taken slowly and with a guide who knows how to hold the room.

8:00 AM

Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum

The former Security Prison 21, with your guide providing the historical context that the rooms alone cannot.

10:30 AM

Choeung Ek memorial

The memorial site outside the city. Quiet, unhurried, and entirely at your pace.

Afternoon

Royal Palace & Silver Pagoda

Optional, and a deliberate change of register — gold, silver-tiled floors and the living monarchy. Add the National Museum or a cyclo ride through the old quarter.

Day 3

Overland to Siem Reap

Cambodia between its two cities — the part most itineraries skip past at altitude.

Morning

Head north

Shared coach as standard, or upgrade to a private car so the day becomes part of the trip rather than a transfer.

Midday

Skun & a roadside lunch

Private transfers stop at Skun market — famous, fairly, for its fried spiders — and a local lunch stop.

Afternoon

Kampong Kdei bridge

A 12th-century Khmer corbelled-arch bridge, one of the oldest still standing anywhere. Then on into Siem Reap.

Day 4

Angkor — the full day

An early start, and the reason you came.

5:00 AM

Angkor Wat at sunrise

We enter from the quieter eastern side, away from the crush at the western reflecting pools.

8:00 AM

Breakfast at the temples

Included, and taken just outside the complex before the heat arrives.

9:00 AM

Ta Prohm & Ta Nei

The strangler-fig galleries, then Ta Nei — a small forest temple most visitors never reach.

11:00 AM

Angkor Thom & the Bayon

Through the South Gate into the walled city, and on to the Bayon's stone faces.

Day 5

Tonle Sap & departure

One last morning on the water before your flight.

8:00 AM

Floating village by boat

Kampong Pluk or Chong Khneas depending on the water level — we pick the one that is genuinely afloat that month.

Midday

Airport transfer

Direct to Siem Reap International. Book your flight from 4:00 PM onward so the morning is never rushed.

Answers

Phnom Penh & Angkor questions, answered

How many days do you need for Phnom Penh and Angkor Wat?
Five days is the practical minimum to see both properly. That allows one day in Phnom Penh for the memorial sites, one day to travel overland between the cities, one full day at Angkor and one morning on the Tonle Sap, without any of it feeling rushed.
Should I fly or drive from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap?
Driving takes about six hours and shows you rural Cambodia, the market towns and the 12th-century Kampong Kdei bridge. Flying takes 45 minutes and shows you nothing. On a five-day trip we recommend the road, ideally in a private car so you can stop.
How much is the Angkor pass and is it included?
The Angkor Archaeological Park pass is $37 for one day, $62 for three days and $72 for seven days, bought at the official ticket office or online. The one-day pass is included in this package.
Is Angkor Wat sunrise worth the early start?
Yes, for two reasons: the temperature and the light. You will be walking at 26°C instead of 36°C, and the sandstone turns from grey to gold over about twenty minutes. We enter from the eastern side, which is materially quieter than the main western approach.
Are Tuol Sleng and Choeung Ek suitable for children?
Both sites are confronting and are generally not recommended for children under about twelve. If you are travelling as a family we will restructure Day 2 around the Royal Palace, the National Museum and a cyclo tour instead — just tell us when you enquire.
When is the best time of year for this trip?
November to February brings the driest skies and the most comfortable temperatures, roughly 25-30°C. The May to October monsoon means greener landscapes, fuller lakes, fewer visitors and lower hotel rates, with rain usually falling in short afternoon bursts rather than all day.
