Ethical Elephant Sanctuaries

Cambodia's four most reputable sanctuaries — Elephant Valley Project, the Mondulkiri Project, Kulen Elephant Forest and Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary — run strictly observation-based programs: no riding, no bathing, no forced contact. At Kulen, eleven elephants rescued from giving rides at Angkor now roam free forest while you walk alongside and learn from their mahouts. Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary is home to Kaavan, the elephant Cher helped free after 50 years.

Irrawaddy Dolphin Spotting — Kratie

The Mekong near Kratie is one of the last places on Earth to see the critically endangered Irrawaddy dolphin in the wild. The Kampi pool, 15km north of town, is the river's most reliable spot — small wooden boats head out on quiet morning tours as the dolphins surface. Pair it with sleepy, colonial-era Kratie and car-free Koh Trong island for a full Mekong day.

Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre

Cambodia's largest sanctuary — 6,000 acres of protected forest housing 100+ rescued species, from sun bears and tigers to gibbons and silver langurs. Wildlife Alliance's Behind-the-Scenes tour opens staff-only areas: the tiger den, the nursery, the elephant meadow and the macaque enclosure. The fee is a tax-deductible donation — 100% goes to rescue and release.

How we keep wildlife wild

Observation only

You watch animals behave naturally — no riding, performances or staged photos.

No direct contact

No bathing, feeding by hand or touching — contact stresses animals and we avoid it.

Rescue, not capture

Every animal is a rescue — from the wildlife trade, captivity or the tourist-ride industry.

Funds real conservation

Ticket revenue pays for rehabilitation, habitat protection and release programs.

Community-run

Many tours are led by local villages, making protecting the forest worth more than clearing it.

Vetted partners only

We list the four most reputable elephant sanctuaries and skip anything that allows riding.

Cambodia wildlife FAQ

Are elephant experiences in Cambodia ethical?
The four sanctuaries we recommend — Elephant Valley Project, the Mondulkiri Project, Kulen Elephant Forest and Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary — are strictly observation-based, with no riding, bathing or forced contact. Visitors walk alongside rescued elephants in natural forest.
Where can I see Irrawaddy dolphins in Cambodia?
The Kampi pool on the Mekong River, 15km north of Kratie, is the most reliable spot. Small wooden boats run one-hour morning tours, and November to May (the dry season) offers the best visibility.
What is the Phnom Tamao Behind-the-Scenes tour?
Run by Wildlife Alliance, it gives access to staff-only areas — the tiger den, nursery, elephant meadow and macaque enclosure. The fee is a tax-deductible donation, with 100% going to rescue, rehabilitation and release.
Is Cambodia good for birdwatching?
Yes — over 650 species have been recorded, including the rare Giant Ibis (the national bird) at Tmatboey and the Sarus Crane at Ang Trapaeng Thmor. Guided days run $25–45 with professional local guides.
When is the best time for wildlife in Cambodia?
November to May (the dry season) is best for most wildlife, including dolphins and birds. The Sarus Crane is visible November to March; gibbon and Cardamom treks run year-round with the dry season most comfortable.
