Siem Reap Green Journey

Two days in Siem Reap split cleanly in half: one with the people who live here — social enterprises, a farming village, a cooking fire — and one with the temples they have lived beside for eight hundred years.

In short

What this trip is

The Siem Reap Green Journey is a 2 day responsible-travel tour of Siem Reap, Cambodia. Day one is spent with the community: a female-driven tuk tuk, the APOPO landmine-detection visitor centre, lunch at a social-enterprise training restaurant, a walk through Chhreav farming village and a hands-on Khmer cooking dinner at sunset. Day two covers Ta Prohm, Angkor Thom, the Bayon and Angkor Wat at their quietest hours, with a village noodle-making class in between. It is built for travellers who want their spending to stay local.

  • 1

Your money stays in Siem Reap

The restaurants, drivers, guides and village hosts on this itinerary are local businesses and social enterprises. Nothing on day one routes through an international operator.

  • 2

    Women drive the first day

Day one runs on a female-driven tuk tuk — still unusual in Cambodia, and a direct, checkable piece of income for the driver and her family.

  • 3

The temples, at the right hours

Day two is timed around the crowds rather than the opening times: Ta Prohm early, the Bayon after the coach groups have moved on, Angkor Wat at golden hour.

Highlights

What you will actually do

01 — The rats that save lives A landmine detection rat working a cleared field in Cambodia

APOPO Visitor Centre

Cambodia still contains millions of unexploded landmines. APOPO trains African giant pouched rats to detect them by scent — light enough not to trigger a mine, fast enough to clear in thirty minutes what takes a human four days.

02 — Lunch with a purpose A plate of Khmer food served at a social enterprise restaurant in Siem Reap

A social-enterprise kitchen

Lunch at a training restaurant that takes on young Cambodians from difficult backgrounds and puts them through a full hospitality apprenticeship. The food is very good; the point is who cooked it.

Village cooking & noodle-making

An afternoon in Chhreav, then a sunset cooking fire — and on day two, rice-noodle making in Preah Dak, a village that has been making them the same way for generations.

Day 2

The temples

Early, but not brutal — and with a village morning folded into the middle.

6:30 AM

Ta Prohm

The jungle temple first, while the light is soft and the galleries are close to empty.

8:30 AM

Breakfast by Srah Srang

At a locally owned restaurant beside the old royal bathing reservoir.

Preah Dak village

A village walk and a hands-on rice-noodle class — the staple of Khmer breakfast, made from scratch.

Answers

Green Journey questions, answered

What makes this a responsible or sustainable tour?
Three concrete things rather than a label: day one runs on a female-driven tuk tuk, meals are taken at social enterprises that train young Cambodians into hospitality work, and the village visits pay the host families directly. You also carry refillable bottles rather than a case of single-use plastic.
Is the Angkor pass included in this package?
No — the Angkor Archaeological Park pass is bought separately, currently $37 for one day, $62 for three days and $72 for seven days. Everything else on the itinerary, including all the social-enterprise visits and meals listed, is included.
What is APOPO and why visit?
APOPO is a humanitarian demining organisation that trains African giant pouched rats to detect landmines by scent. The rats are too light to detonate a mine and can search an area in about thirty minutes that would take a human deminer up to four days. Cambodia remains one of the most heavily mined countries in the world.
Is this suitable for children?
Yes, and it is one of the better Cambodia itineraries for families. The pace is gentle, the cooking and noodle-making classes are genuinely hands-on, and the APOPO centre is engaging for most ages. There are no memorial sites on this itinerary.
Two days but three nights — why?
The itinerary uses two full touring days, and we quote three nights so you arrive the evening before day one and are not touring on the day you land. If your flights make a different shape work better, we will rebuild it around them.
Can this be combined with the temples package?
Yes — it is the most common combination we build. The Green Journey pairs naturally with a longer Angkor itinerary or with the Phnom Penh route, usually as the opening or closing two days. Tell us your total number of nights and we will lay it out.
