Srae Ambel sits in Koh Kong province on National Highway 4, the road between Phnom Penh and the coast. Most people drive straight through it. That is precisely what makes it useful: a river, a small town and almost no tourism, about halfway between the capital and the sea.
Sea River Lodge is a small riverside property here, and one we book for guests who want a night that is not a city or a beach resort. There are three house types, an open-air kitchen, and kayaks on the water. That is the whole proposition, and it is the right one for the setting.
The houses
Three types, each a separate structure rather than a room on a corridor. The Frangipani Container House is the simplest. The Lotus A-Frame sits in the middle. The Romduol Luxury House is the largest. All three have air conditioning, hot water, wifi and a fridge, which in rural Koh Kong is not a given.
On the water
Kayaks are available on the river, with the first hour included for guests. The river here is calm and the banks are mangrove and scrub rather than development, so an hour on the water is a genuinely quiet hour.
Where it fits in a trip
Two ways, in our experience. As a stopover breaking the Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville or Koh Kong drive into two easy halves rather than one long one. Or as a night of nothing in the middle of a busier itinerary, which is often what people need after temples.
Food is served at the lodge in the open air. Breakfast is not included in the room rate, which is worth knowing when you compare it with a city hotel.
