Three things catch visitors out in Cambodia, and none of them is a secret. We would rather you read them here than learn them at a checkpoint.
The Australian Embassy in Phnom Penh states that international licences are not currently accepted in Cambodia, and that no licence is required for motorcycles of 125cc or smaller. Above that, and for any car, a Cambodian licence is the position we work to. We confirm the current rule in writing before every hire rather than repeating what a forum said.
Some operators hold a passport as deposit. We do not work with them, and you should refuse it anywhere else. A card pre-authorisation or a cash deposit against a signed receipt is the normal, recoverable alternative.
Most travel policies only cover a motorbike claim if you hold a motorcycle licence at home, whatever the engine size, and many exclude off-road riding entirely. Read your own policy wording. We will not tell you that you are covered, because only your insurer can.
