Trek, zip & climb

Three signature experiences that define adventure travel in Cambodia.

Jungle trekking in the Cardamom Mountains
01 — Into the wild

Cardamom Mountains Jungle Trek

The largest intact rainforest in mainland Southeast Asia — 4.4 million hectares of genuine wilderness. Two-day treks from Chi Phat camp beside a jungle waterfall with former-hunter guides who read animal tracks and medicinal plants; three-day expeditions summit Phnom Aural (1,813m), Cambodia's highest peak. Gibbons, hornbills and camera-trap tigers share the trail.

Ziplining at Angkor

Glide through the jungle canopy of the Angkor Archaeological Park, looking down on ancient stone ruins half-hidden beneath centuries of growth — a perspective no ground-level temple visit can match. A 2–3 hour circuit of varying lines with full safety gear and professional guides; early-morning slots are cooler and better for photos. Heritage and adrenaline at once.

Rock climbing on Kampot limestone cliffs
03 — Vertical Cambodia

Rock Climbing in Kampot

Southeast Asia's most underrated climbing destination. The limestone cliffs around Kampot and Bokor Mountain offer face climbs, crack routes and multi-pitch lines on solid tropical rock — no experience needed for guided intro sessions. The reward at the top: jungle, the Kampot River, and the Gulf of Thailand on the horizon. Cave climbing and bouldering for the experienced.

When to do what

Cambodia's adventures each have a sweet spot. Peak season is the dry, cooler window; the wet months (roughly June–September) bring heavy rain, leeches and muddy or slippery trails.

More ways to get the blood pumping

Six more Cambodian adventures

Cycling & Mountain Biking

Pedal quiet forest tracks between Angkor's temples, or ride Chi Phat's technical single-track through primary rainforest.

Quad & Dirt Biking

The most popular motorised thrill — quads through Siem Reap's rice paddies, or dirt bikes across sand riverbeds and mountain trails.

Hot Air Balloon

Rise over Angkor at sunrise as the five towers emerge from the mist, Tonlé Sap shimmering on the horizon. 45–60 minutes of pure serenity.

Whitewater Kayaking

Navigate Mekong rapids near Kratie, or paddle the crystal-clear Tatai River through pristine Cardamom rainforest with near-zero boat traffic.

Scuba & Snorkelling

Dive the protected reefs of the Koh Rong Archipelago — improving coral, 15–25m visibility, PADI courses and even seasonal whale-shark sightings.

HeroRATS Mine Experience

One of a kind on Earth — watch trained African pouched rats detect landmines by scent. Profound, family-friendly, and it funds real mine clearance.

Cambodia adventure FAQ

What are the best adventure activities in Cambodia?
The signature adventures are multi-day jungle trekking in the Cardamom Mountains, ziplining over the Angkor canopy, and rock climbing on Kampot's limestone. Add hot-air ballooning over Angkor, whitewater kayaking, scuba diving off Koh Rong, quad and dirt biking, mountain biking, and the one-of-a-kind HeroRATS mine-detection experience.
How hard is the Cardamom Mountains trek?
It scales to your fitness. One-day forest walks are gentle; the popular two-day Chi Phat trek is moderate, with camping beside a waterfall; and three-to-five-day expeditions — including the Phnom Aural summit at 1,813m — are genuinely challenging. Operators customise difficulty to your group, and local guides carry the camping equipment.
When is the best time for adventure activities in Cambodia?
The dry season, roughly November to April, is peak for almost everything — trekking, climbing, ballooning, biking and diving. The wet months of June to September bring heavy rain, leeches and slippery trails, so land-based treks are best avoided then. Kayaking and ziplining run largely year-round. See the seasonality chart above for each activity.
Can beginners do these adventures?
Absolutely. Ziplining, quad biking, hot-air ballooning, e-bike tours, snorkelling and the HeroRATS experience are all easy and suitable for families and first-timers. Rock climbing and diving offer guided intro sessions with no prior experience needed, and treks come in one-day formats before you commit to a multi-day expedition.
What is the HeroRATS experience?
Run by APOPO in Siem Reap, it's a guided tour showing how trained giant African pouched rats detect landmines by scent — faster and safer than metal detectors. You watch a live demonstration on a simulated minefield and meet the rats. It's about 1–1.5 hours, appropriate for all ages, and proceeds fund ongoing mine clearance.
