This is not a sightseeing morning and we do not present it as one.

Tuol Sleng was a school before it was a prison. Choeung Ek was an orchard. The audio guides at both are restrained and carry first-hand testimony, and taking them is the difference between walking through a place and understanding what happened in it.

The practical advice

Go in the morning. Leave the afternoon empty. Do not book a sunset cruise for the same day – guests who do invariably wish they had not, and a quiet lunch and an unscheduled afternoon are the right shape for it.

Should I visit Tuol Sleng and Choeung Ek?

If you are travelling in Cambodia, we think yes. The period is within living memory and it explains a great deal about the country you are moving through.

Are they suitable for children?

Not for young ones. Older teenagers, with preparation and a conversation afterwards.

Can I do both in one morning?

Yes, and that is how most people do it. Leave the afternoon free.

Do I need a guide?

The audio guides at both sites are excellent, and being alone with them is part of it. A guide is valuable for the questions afterwards.

Sunrise at Angkor Wat means leaving your hotel around 4.30am to be at the west causeway before the sky changes. It is busy, and it is still worth it. The trick is what you do at 7am, when the crowd goes to breakfast and the temples empty out.

Pchum Ben (Ancestors Day)

Pchum Ben is a fifteen-day period of offerings to ancestors, falling in September or October depending on the lunar calendar, with the final three days as public holidays. It is quieter and more inward than the other festivals, and pagodas fill before dawn.
