Smart (Smart Axiata)

City-based trips, remote work, and anyone who wants the smoothest data experience in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

In short

Smart, owned by the Malaysian group Axiata, is Cambodia's second-largest network and generally the strongest performer in cities and larger towns. It was the first operator in the country to launch 4G, sells traveller SIMs at airport booths, and is the usual recommendation for a trip centred on Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Smart Axiata is part of the Malaysian Axiata Group, and it built its reputation on being first and fastest – it launched Cambodia’s first 4G network in 2014, well ahead of its competitors, and has generally led independent speed testing in urban areas since.

For most of our guests, Smart is the default recommendation. A typical Cambodia itinerary spends its nights in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Kampot or Sihanoukville, and Smart is at its best in exactly those places.

Where it falls short

Rural coverage. Smart is good across the country’s populated areas, but in the northeastern provinces and on the smaller islands, Metfone will hold a signal where Smart does not. If your trip is genuinely remote, carry Metfone or expect to be offline in places – which, to be fair, is sometimes the point.

Getting one on arrival

Smart’s airport booths are among the easiest to deal with, staffed by people who set up traveller packages dozens of times a day and will put the SIM in your phone for you. Bring your passport. If your phone supports eSIM, you can skip the counter entirely.
