The town is full of small walled properties built around a courtyard and a pool, many of them converted villas, most of them owner-run. They are green, quiet, and staffed by people who remember your name by the second morning. For the price of an ordinary chain room in a larger city, you get something with a character of its own.

Which side of the river

Wat Bo, on the east bank, is where most of them are and where we would send you. It is residential, shaded, and a ten-minute walk over the bridge to the restaurants. The lanes behind the Old French Quarter have others, closer to the action and correspondingly louder.

The thing to check

Two questions settle most of it. Is the pool overlooked by the building next door, and how far is the nearest late-night bar. Siem Reap’s nightlife is concentrated and loud, and a wall does less than you would hope.

From Wat Bo and the riverside, yes, in ten to fifteen minutes. From the road towards Angkor, no - you will want a tuk-tuk.
Do they arrange temple guides?
Most do, and their drivers tend to be regulars rather than whoever is outside. It is usually worth taking the hotel's.
