The country becomes the show

Bon Om Touk — Water Festival

Cambodia's biggest festival, marking the reversal of the Tonlé Sap's flow each November. For three days Phnom Penh fills as 1–3 million people line the riverbanks to watch hundreds of longboats — 40–80 rowers each, with painted naga prows — race in heats. After dark, illuminated boats glide past the Royal Palace and fireworks light the water.

Khmer New Year — Chaul Chnam Thmey

The cultural soul of the Khmer calendar, marking the harvest's end across three days of public holiday. Streets burst into joyful water fights; village squares fill with folk games like Bos Angkunh and Chaol Chhoung; and at Angkor Sankranta, the temple grounds become a stage of Apsara dance, music and lantern light against the ancient towers.

Pchum Ben — Ancestors' Day

A 15-day Buddhist festival honouring ancestors up to seven generations back, when the gates of the spirit world are believed to open. For two weeks, families arrive at pagodas before dawn with sticky-rice offerings; on the final day, Ben Thom, the whole country travels home. The most genuine, emotional window into Cambodia's spiritual heart.

Cambodia festivals FAQ

When is the best time to visit Cambodia for festivals?
November is the best all-round month: the Water Festival (Nov 23–25) and Independence Day illuminations (Nov 9) fall in cool, dry weather ideal for sightseeing. For a spiritual experience choose October during Pchum Ben, and for families April delivers Khmer New Year's joyful water fights and Angkor Sankranta.
When is the Cambodia Water Festival in 2026?
Bon Om Touk, the Water Festival, runs November 23–25, 2026 — three days of public holiday. It is celebrated most spectacularly in Phnom Penh along the Tonlé Sap and Mekong, with a smaller, more relaxed version on the Siem Reap River. Book accommodation months in advance and arrive at least a day before the races.
What is Pchum Ben and when does it happen?
Pchum Ben is a 15-day Buddhist festival honouring ancestors up to seven generations back. In 2026 the main day, Ben Thom, falls on October 12 (public holiday October 10–12), with the observance beginning in late September. Families visit pagodas before dawn with sticky-rice offerings; respectful participation is welcomed.
What should I know about Khmer New Year water fights?
During Khmer New Year (April 14–16, 2026), streets across Cambodia erupt into joyful water splashing to symbolise washing away misfortune. Travellers are welcome to join — waterproof your phone and valuables or leave them at the hotel, and expect to get thoroughly soaked.
What is the etiquette for photographing festivals?
During spiritual festivals like Pchum Ben and the Wien Tien candlelight processions, always ask permission before photographing people in prayer, and dress modestly in dark or respectful colours. Early morning (around 4:30–6:00am) is the most atmospheric time at the pagodas.
